Shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23, 2018 firefighters and paramedics from Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS) were dispatched for smoke in a house by a possible lightning strike in the 7000 block of Woodscape Drive. Upon arrival crews found a two-story single-family home with smoke showing. A first alarm with a task force was requested and was quickly upgraded to a 2nd alarm due to heavy fire conditions. At approximately 02:20am, while operating as part of an interior offensive fire attack, Firefighter Nathan Flynn fell through the floor. A MADAY was called and a rapid intervention team immediately deployed. Firefighter Flynn was located, extricated and immediately given emergency medical care. At 02:42 he was transported to Howard County General Hospital where he died from his injuries at approximately 05:30. Firefighter Flynn, assigned to Special Ops Rivers Park Station #10,was the first HCDFRS career firefighter to die in the Line Of Duty.He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant . Lieutenant Nathan Eric "Nate" Flynn was 34 years old and had served for 13 years.
