RICE, Waverly F.

On December 16, 1964, units responded to the scene of a working townhouse fire on National Pike. Firefighter Waverly Rice was at the rear of the engine pulling hose when the brakes slipped, causing the engine to jump backwards. The engine struck Firefighter Rice with such force he was knocked him to the ground, landing on his back with his feet up in the air. In an instant, the engine jumped again, this time pinning Firefighter Rice to the frozen ground and critically injuring him having fractured his pelvis and causing massive internal injuries. On Christmas Day, December 25, 1964, Firefighter Waverly Rice died from those injuries he sustained. Firefighter Waverly F. Rice was 49 years old and had served 11 years.
