Box No.563 sounded at 9:54 a.m. for building fire. Units arrived to find an "L" shaped 3 story brick building with heavy fire and smoke conditions. The fire went 6 alarms, including a special call for the Snorkel, within the first 12 minutes. The ambient temperature on that July morning was already 95 degrees.
Firefighter Morris E. Hunt (T-6) complained of feeling ill, walked out of the smoke-filled yard, and collapsed on the fender of E-8,having suffered sudden cardiac arrest.
Battalion Chief Martin McMahon immediately began mouth to mouth resuscitation ,while Fire Department Surgeon Dr. Joseph D'Antonio applied external heart massage. Sadly,all resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
Firefighter Morris E. Hunt was 32 years old and had served 9 years.
