KEARNEY, Anthony L.
On October 31, 1958, Box No. 1934 sounded at 8:02 a.m. The Manganese Reduction Company at 3915 E. Baltimore Street was afire. The fire was in a case of chemicals stored in a vault-like room on the first floor of the, 5 story high by 1 block long, brick warehouse. The burning chemical produced noxious fumes that penetrated the air masks worn by the firefighters. On that day, Lieutenant Charles A. Leutner (E-24) died as a result of the fumes from those burning chemicals and an additional twenty-five firefighters were hospitalized, with some of those becoming gravely ill. One of those firefighters was Anthony L. Kearney, Sr (E-24). Firefighter Kearney was critically injured by the fumes from the burning chemicals, was thought to be near death for several days, remained hospitalized, and endured intense suffering for many weeks. He never completely & fully recovered but, having been transferred to the Fire Alarm Office, he eventually was able to return to duty and worked until his death on March 22, 1965. On October 1, 1965 Local 764 & Local 964 established the Anthony L. Kearney Award to be given annually to the person who does the most to promote the image of the firefighter. Firefighter Anthony Leo Kearney, Sr. was 46 years old. Number of years served are unknown at this time.
