KRAMPE, John T.

Box No. 639 sounded for a fire in the hold of the S.S. Nantucket, docked at Pier No. 5, Locust Point. The second alarm was sounded and conditions were the worst because of thick acrid smoke belching out of the hatchways. Pipeman John T. Krampe was getting the hosepipe into play when he fell into an open hatchway, plunging to the bottom of the burning vessel, and to his death. Pipeman John T. Krampe was 35 years old and had served 3 years.
