LEUTNER, Charles A.
Box No. 1934 sounded at 8:02 a.m. The Manganese Reduction Company at 3915 E. Baltimore Street was afire. The fire was in a case of chemicals stored in a vault-like room on the first floor of the 5 story high by 1 block long, brick warehouse. The burning chemical produced noxious fumes that penetrated the airmasks worn by the firefighters. Twenty-five firefighters were hospitalized; some having been totally overcome by the fumes and collapsing, while others were partially overcome and became desperately ill. Lieutenant Charles A. Leutner (E-24) died on October 31,1958 at Mercy Hospital, as a result of being exposed to and inhaling the chemical fumes produced by the fire. Lieutenant Charles A. Leutner was 45 years old and had served for 20 years.
