While pumping a hydrant for a 6 alarm building fire at the Baltimore Lumber Company, Engine Co. No. 22's Assistant Engineman, Herman Leyh, suffered a heart attack and was transported to City Hospital. Sadly, he died a few hours after arriving.

Assistant Engineman Herman Leyh was 59 years old and had served for 27 years.

 

Responded with Engine Co. No. 22 to hugh storage shed fire which was touched off by lightning striking a transformer. Became an eight alarm fire. Engine 22 was working from a close-by hydrant when Assistant Engineman Leyh collapsed.
