Box No. 158 sounded at 8:10 a.m. Brown's Cotton Warehouse, which consisted of 5 buildings packed with bales of cotton at Thames & Bond Streets, was on fire. The blazing cotton was a stubborn fire and, for over 10 hours, the department's first fireboat, The Cataract, flowed 5 streams of water onto the buildings. At approximately 6:00 p.m. Lieutenant James R. Lindsay (E-5) was killed when a wall collapsed burying him under numerous bales of cotton. Lieutenant James R. Lindsay was 51 years old with 14 years of faithful service. ** in 1892 a dry bale of cotton weighed on average 477 pounds. Cotton can retain 24 times its own weight in water.
