Responded to a 6 alarm fire on Norwegian Steamship Gilsa which was tied up at Pier 8. Vessel was loaded with 5000 tons of highly flammable nitrate which caused many explosions, one of which knocked Fireman Reif unconscious and into a pool of water on the pier causing him to drown.
