ROCHESTER, Matthew N.

October 29, 1868 Box 38 sounded at 1:25 a.m. Hostler Matthew Rochester was off duty but he jumped into the driver's seat of Hook & Ladder No. 1 & responded to the call. While returning from what turned out to be a false alarm, H & L No. 1 turned onto Buren Street from Monument. A front wheel of the truck struck the railroad track, throwing Hostler Rochester out of the truck and onto the railroad tracks where he struck his head. Then, before the horses could be halted, the rear wheel of the truck passed over Hostler Rochester's head. Hostler Matthew N. Rochester was 31 years old. Number of years served are unknown at this time.
