RYAN, Henry
On November 17, 1886, while on a multi-alarm fire at the Burrough Bros. Chemical Work, 92 Camden Street, the Hayes aerial ladder had been fully extended and on it were 7 pipemen, 3 hose pipes and heavy hose. The weight was too much and the truck flipped onto it's side, causing the extended ladder and the 7 pipemen to be slammed into the adjacent building. Pipeman Francis Kerr, Pipeman Charles Grund, Pipeman Henry Ryan,and Pipeman Charles Betz were all critically injured and taken to House No. 2 where Kerr & Grund died a few hours later. Pipeman Ryan was in severe pain, his hip & back fractured and one leg reported to be paralyzed. Pipeman Ryan was transported to Maryland University Hospital where he died from his injuries on November 21, 1886. Pipeman Henry Ryan was 26 years old and had served 6 years.
