On August 4, 1887 **Box No.521 sounded at 3:40am The James D. Mason Bakery was afire. Second and Third alarms were sounded in the next 4 minutes, as the 5-story brick building was ablaze from top to bottom, flames leaping sky high into the night air and lighting up the whole city. Captain William Schulte and members of Engine Co. No. 12 took a hoseline to the rear alley upper window when part of the wall fell. The firemen ran to the front, but Captain Schulte turned and went back to retrieve the hose pipe, when the rest of the wall collapsed, carrying him to the ground.
