SHIPLEY, E. Louis

November 9,1928

Shortly after 8 pm, Deputy Chief No.2, E.Louis Shipley strolled outside of his quarters, as was his usual custom ,to a nearby cigar store to buy his favorite brand. Suddenly, he collapsed in a coma. The porter ran as fast as he could to the firehouse and shouted "Your boss just fell dead on the floor, come quick" Members of Hose Co.No.1 carried the body back to quarters where it was placed in the department ambulance and rushed to Mercy Hospital. Chief Shipley was pronounced dead due to a cerebral hemorrhage.

Chief E. Louis Shipley "the Department's grand old man" was 67 years old and had served 42 faithful years, 29 of those as Chief.
