On Wednesday ,October 13, 1937, Box No. 528 sounded at 9:01 p.m. A 3-story brick loft building, southwest corner of Hanover and Perry Sts. was afire. The H.H. Hoffenberg Printers occupied the lower floor and the Gordon-Lavin Paper Box Co., the upper floors. Five alarms were sounded as the fire took hold of the building. Early on, a brick wall collapsed , killing 32 year old Lieutenant James K. Harrison.

Several hours later, while racking up hose lines on the fire ground, Fireman John H. Sommers suffered a heart attack. He was transported to South Baltimore General where, tragically, he was pronounced D.O.A.

Firemen John H. Sommers had served in the fire department for 6 years. His age at the time of his death is unknown at this time.
