BERNHARD, William A
Box No. 1834 sounded at 6pm. Joseph Schwienteck & Son -Welders at Highland Ave & Elliott St. was afire. The L-shaped two story brick building was fully involved and 3 alarms were sounded. The wooden roof suddenly collapsed onto three firefighters, but all 3 were immediately & successfully rescued from the rubble by their comrades. Firefighter William A. Bernhard was carrying a ladder to the building when he suddenly collapsed from an apparent heart attack and was transported to City Hospital. Sadly, all resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
Firefighter Bernhard was a Veteran of the United States Navy having served on mine sweepers in both the Atlantic & Pacific Theatres during WWII. Firefighter William A. Bernhard was 46 years old and had served over 13 years.
