CAMPBELL, Herbert Blantley
On April 22, 1940 , Box No. 62 sounded at 4:41 a.m. The 4 story brick furniture warehouse of Four Besche Brothers, 102 – 110 E.Cross St was on fire. The fire raged through the warehouse into the main store, and quickly went to 8 alarms. Six firemen were injured during the fire including Salvage Corps Lieutenant Herbert Campbell, who fell from a ladder & suffered an abdominal injury. He was transported to South Baltimore General where he was admitted & received surgical intervention for his injuries. He remained in the hospital until his death on July 14, 1940. Lieutenant Campbell was a decorated member having received a commendation for rescuing 2 sisters from a burning building in 1928 and in 1930 he received a gold medal for rescuing the occupants of 663 West Lexington Street when that structure was on fire. Lt. Campbell was the son of BCFD BC James Campbell and brother of BCFD Lt. Malcolm Campbell. Lieutenant Herbert Brantley Campbell was 40 years old and had served for 20 years.
