On December 19,1883 ,Box No. 134 was sounded for a cotton warehouse fire on Union Dock that quickly went to 3 alarms.

Ladderman Joseph V. Dougherty was working off of Hook & Ladder No.1 at the south end of the building when the gable wall began to sway. Before he could get down from the ladder , the wall collapsed, and Ladderman Doughtery was buried in the rubble.He was rescued and for the next 6 days "suffered intense agony" before he died at his home on Christmas Day ~ December 25,1883, from lockjaw.

Ladderman Joseph V. Dougherty was 35 years old.
