On November 13, 1914, Box 158 was sounded for a building fire at the Terminal Warehouse. While responding on the call, the motor hose wagon of Engine Co. No. 32 collided with the car of District Chief Engineer John L. Emerson at Pratt & Central Aves.

Chief Emerson was "hurled with terrific force" against the side of the Kavanaugh Copper Works building and was rendered unconscious. He was transported to Mercy Hospital and remained unconscious until his death on November 16, 1914.

District Chief Engineer John L. Emerson was 46 years old and had served 22 faithful years.
