FUMBAUGH, Herman
February 7, 1912 On January 7, 1912, a 5-alarm shoe store fire had been fought for over 2 days in weather so bitterly cold that water used to extinguish the flames caused the wet coats of exhausted firefighters to freeze to their skin and icicles to hang from their helmets. When the fire was finally extinguished and the recall tapped out, Captain August Schlimm (E-3) and Hostler Herman Fumbaugh (E-3), each having contracted pneumonia from the exposure during the long struggle at the fire, went home to their sick beds, and remained in their sick beds until February 7, 1912 when both men died. Hostler Herman Fumbaugh had faithfully served for over 24 years. His age is unknown at this time.
