December 4,1967

On December 2,1967 , Box No. 8262 sounded. While responding on what turned out to be a false alarm, Truck No. 5 was struck by a hit and run driver. The impact resulted in 3 firefighters being injured. Tillerman Joseph Kraus received minor injuries & was treated at the fire department infirmary. Firefighter Thomas Curley was thrown from the apparatus into the road & was transported to Mercy Hospital with a fractured pelvis. Firefighter James L. Grahe, Sr. was thrown from the hook & ladder, head-on into a vehicle, and was rendered unconscious. He was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he underwent emergency brain surgery. Sadly, Firefighter Grahe died from his injuries on December 4,1967. Firefighter James L. Grahe, Sr. was 24 years old and had served 2 years.
