Box No. 21 sounded at 12:04 a.m. The Joseph Regester & Sons Foundry was afire. Units arrived to find heavy fire on the 3rd floor of the 6 story brick building located at Holliday and Saratoga Streets that would quickly go multiple alarms. At approximately 12:17 a.m., suddenly & without warning, the Foundry's Saratoga Street wall fell , burying some 25 firemen under tons of brick, and smashing the No.1 Hayes Ariel ladder to pieces. Three firemen were killed and twenty two firemen were injured. Lieutenant Frederick W. Harman (E-3) was 43 years old and had served 15 years and 5 months. Hostler Charles Freiman (E-3) was 32 years old and had served 1 year and 10 months. Pipeman William B. Pugh (E-33) was 26 years old and had served 5 3/4 months. Baltimore City Mayor Mahool, who personally assisted in fighting the fire, issued the following statement: " Like all Baltimoreans, I deeply regret the death of the firemen and the injury of the others,and my sincere sympathy goes out to the bereaved families".
