PHILLIPS, KEITH A.

Honoring & Remembering Maryland Fallen Heros.

Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department ~ Carroll County ~ Maryland

May 2, 2021

At age 15, Keith Phillips found his passion for the fire service when he became a Junior Firefighter at New Midway Fire Company in Frederick.

In 1992 he joined the Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Company in Carroll County where he was active with fire & EMS. He continued to be active in fire & EMS when he joined the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company in 2001, and then the Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department in 2012 , where for the next 10 years, he held various line officer positions, served on the Executive Board, & assisted with fundraising. He was also active with the Carroll County Haz Mat Team.

Since the year 2000, Keith had worked as a career Emergency Communications Specialist for the Carroll County Department of Public Safety in the Emergency Communications Center.

In 2018, Keith was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer. Surgery was performed to remove as much of the cancer as possible & resulted in Keith losing mobility on his left side. Nevertheless, although no longer able to run calls, & battling Glioblastoma, Keith could often be found at the Winfield VFD, determined to help in any way he could.

Keith lost his battle on May 2, 2021, surrounded by his family and his fire department family. His LODD was ruled as Occupational Exposure/Cancer.

Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department Captain Keith Alan Phillips, a 2016 recipient of the Shock Trauma Hero Award, was 48 years old & had served the citizens of Maryland for 33 years.
