CHAPMAN, George R.
Construction of the Conowingo Dam began in 1926 and was completed in 1928. The Conowingo Fire Department, commanded by Chief George R. Chapman, was equipped with one fire engine, and protected the work camps and the construction site. On April 25, 1927 Chief Chapman was riding in the command seat on the pumper as it traveled on the state highway in Harford County. Suddenly, the fire engine crashed into a roadside bank, overturned, and fatally injured Chief Chapman. Chief George R. Chapman was 53 years old. Number of years served are unknown at this time.
