Firefighter Winona L. Crum was riding the back-step of the Walkersville fire engine as it responded emergency conditions to a traffic accident during heavy rain . The engine skidded on the wet roadway and impacted a curb, the force of which caused Firefighter Crum to be thrown off the back-step of the engine and fatally injured.

Firefighter Crum was the first female firefighter Line Of Duty Death in the State of Maryland.

Firefighter Winona L. "Winnie" Crum was 31 years old and had served 6 years.
