SHANK, Walter K.

The Citizens Truck Company 100-foot American LaFrance open-cab tiller ladder truck was dispatched to a building fire in Frederick. Firefighter Shank climbed into the jump seat and somehow positioned himself between the tractor and trailer sections of the truck, becoming pinned between them as the truck turned right out of the station. Tillerman Charles "Mike" Hahn saw Firefighter Shank slump and hit the emergency buzzer to stop. Firefighter Shank died from the crushing injuries he received. Firefighter Walter Kable Shank was 57 years old and had served 39 years.
