FLYNN, Nathan E.
Shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23, 2018 firefighters and paramedics from Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS) were dispatched for smoke in a house by a possible lightning strike in the 7000 block of Woodscape Drive. Upon arrival crews found a two-story single-family home with smoke showing. A first alarm with a task force was requested and was quickly upgraded to a 2nd alarm due to heavy fire conditions. At approximately 02:20am, while operating as part of an interior offensive fire attack, Firefighter Nathan Flynn fell through the floor. A MADAY was called and a rapid intervention team immediately deployed. Firefighter Flynn was located, extricated and immediately given emergency medical care. At 02:42 he was transported to Howard County General Hospital where he died from his injuries at approximately 05:30. Firefighter Flynn, assigned to Special Ops Rivers Park Station #10, was the first HCDFRS career firefighter to die in the Line Of Duty. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Lieutenant Nathan Eric "Nate" Flynn was 34 years old and had served for 13 years.
