January 11, 2025
On Saturday, January 11, 2025, firefighters from Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service at Burtonsville Station (FS15) were dispatched to assist with a house fire in Prince George’s County as part of an automatic aid assignment. Master Firefighter (MFF) Christopher Higgins served as the driver/operator of Truck 715 during the response.
In the first few minutes after arrival, MFF Higgins performed multiple exterior fireground operations, including deploying ground ladders, deploying a backup hose line, and controlling natural gas service.
A short time later, MFF Higgins was found unresponsive in the yard, having suffered sudden cardiac arrest. Nearby personnel immediately initiated medical care before transporting him to the White Oak Medical Center Emergency Department. Sadly, all resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
In recognition of his dedication and sacrifice, MFF Christopher Higgins was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with MCFRS.
Prior to being hired by MCFRS, Chris began serving his community as a member of the Earliegh Heights Volunteer Fire Company in Severna Park.
He was a much beloved & devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend.
Montgomery County Fire Rescue Services Lieutenant Christopher J. Higgins was 46 years old and had served the citizens of Maryland for over 25 years.
