COHEN, Sander B.
Deputy Chief Sander B. Cohen was killed on December 8, 2017 at approximately 10:00 p.m. after stopping to assist FBI Supervisory Special Agent Carlos Wolff who had just been involved in single vehicle accident in the southbound lane of I-270 in the Rockville area. Deputy Chief Cohen, who was off-duty and in his personal vehicle, took noticed of the accident, pulled in behind the vehicle of Agent Wolff, activated his emergency flashers and called the Rockville Barrack reporting the accident that placed him in an official capacity. Deputy Chief Cohen exited his vehicle and assisted Agent Wolff. Both Agent Wolff and Deputy Cohen were standing on the shoulder when a vehicle traveling southbound, for reasons unknown, swerved left and struck both Agent Wolff and Deputy Chief Cohen. Both Wolff and Cohen were thrown over the jersey wall where Chief Cohen was struck by a northbound vehicle. Deputy Chief Cohen was pronounced dead at the scene. Agent Wolff was transported to Suburban Hospital where he later died of his injuries. Chief Cohen graduated from Prince Georges County Police Academy in 2009. He was assigned to Southern Regional Office, later taking on the special assignment to assist Prince Georges County Fire & EMS, Fire Investigations Unit. After completing his assignment in Prince Georges County he was assigned to the Upper Eastern Shore Regional Officer prior to transferring to the Northeast Regional Office where he remained until his promotion. Chief Cohen was promoted to Deputy Chief in January of 2017 and was assigned as Regional Commander of the Northeast Regional Office, consisting of Carroll, Harford and Cecil counties. He was team leader on numerous Major Incident Response Team deployments assisting fire investigation units in Baltimore City as well as Montgomery and Howard counties. Sander was a decorated investigator which included receiving a Unit Citation during his assignment with Prince Georges County Fire & EMS Department in May of 2014. It was in recognition of a multi-agency investigation in which a suspect was charged with the manufacture, possession, and detonation of a destructive device in connection with an explosion at the Magic Johnson Movie Theatre in Largo, Maryland. His goal was to graduate Hazardous Device School and become a Bomb Technician within the agency. When off duty, Sander served his community as a volunteer fire captain with the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department ~Station 3, where he had been serving as an active member since 2003. Deputy Chief Sander Benjamin Cohen was 33 years old and had served the citizens of Maryland for 14 years.
