SONDEJ, Alan P.

In the early morning hours of January 27, 1988, Firefighter Alan P. Sondej responded on Hyattsville VFD's T-1 to a report of a working house fire with subject trapped at 2020 Wardman Road in Mount Rainer. Several fire fighters from the crew went into the house to search for the alleged victim. A flash-over occurred, causing the room Firefighter Sondej was searching to be totally engulfed in flames. Firefighter Sondej was severely burned, receiving second and third degree burns to more than 60 percent of his body. He was transported to the Washington Hospital Center's Burn Unit where he remained until his death on March 16, 1988. Firefighter Alan P. Sondej was 31 years old and had served 11 years.
