On Saturday May, 29, 1971, at approximately 06:00 hrs, the Crisfield VFC was alerted for a working apartment fire at the old Collins Street School. Crisfield VFC member Grover C. Adams,Sr., at the time a Traffic Controller for the fire company, responded to the scene on his bicycle, his mode of transportation when responding to calls for some 5 decades. Tragically, while on the fire ground & handling traffic control, Firefighter Adams was stricken with a fatal heart attack.
Firefighter Adams was a long time member of the Crisfield VFC, having served in many positions over the years, including 10 years as Assistant Chief, and his last 2 years as a Traffic Controller.
Firefighter Grover C. Adams, Sr. was 78 years old and had served for over 50 years.
