BERDAN, Roy P.
Honoring & Remembering Maryland Fallen Heroes.
Girdletree VFC ~ Worcester County ~ Maryland
.
February 14,1954
Firefighter Kelly Berdan was responding in Girdletree's open cab Brockway fire engine to a reported chimney fire. As the engine was navigating a sharp curve, the driver applied the brakes, the steering locked up, and the fire engine rolled. Several firemen were thrown from the vehicle and injured. Tragically, Firefighter Berdan was pinned under the 11 ton engine and in excruciating pain for some 25 minutes before nearly 50 firemen, local farmers, 2 trucks, & a tractor, successfully rolled the engine & freed Firefighter Berdan. He was transported to Peninsula General Hospital where, sadly, some 4 1/2 hours later, Firefighter Berdan died from his injuries.
