WHITEHEAD, Douglas E.

At 1:11pm on March 8, 1969, firemen from Laurel and Maryland City were called to 114 Second St. in Laurel for a working house fire. While hooking up to a fire hydrant, Firefighter Douglas E. Whitehead tripped over a supply line and fell to the ground. He was transported to the hospital, treated for an ankle injury and chest pain, then released. He went home to recuperate and at approximately 11pm that same evening he collapsed and died. A former member of the Laurel VFD (1939 ~ 1946) Firefighter Whitehead helped organize the Maryland City Volunteer Fire Department (Est 1967) and was a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving in both the Pacific & European Theatres during WWII. Firefighter Douglas E. Whitehead was 48 years old and had served as a firefighter for some 10+ years.
