HOCHSTEDT, John E.

Box No. 8144 sounded at 7:06 a.m. A lounge room in the Mary Meletia Hall dormitory at the college of Notre Dame of Maryland was on fire. 170 students were fleeing from the building and the fire intense. The Batallion Chief ordered a 6 alarm assignment within 5 minutes. Lieutenant John E. Hochstedt (E-44) was on the nozzle as entry was made into the intense fire. Within a few moments, Lt. Hochstedt collapsed, having suffered cardiac arrest. He was carried outside and transported to the hospital where all resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. Lieutentant John E. Hochstedt was 46 years old and had served 20 years.
