LACAYO, Kenneth A.

On January 24, 2022 at 05:53 hrs, Baltimore City Fire Box 55-10 was sounded for a reported dwelling fire in the 200 block of South Stricker Street. At 05:56 hrs, units arrived to find a vacant 3 story middle of the row home with fire showing from all 3 stories and with an occupied adjacent rowhome (side Delta). At approximately 06:30 hrs: Firefighters were battling the blaze when a partial wall collapse occurred, dumping tons of debris onto 4 firefighters & trapping them in the vacant dwelling. A MAYDAY was called, and a second alarm assignment requested. One firefighter, BCFD EMT/Firefighter John McMaster, was able to be immediately rescued by fellow firefighters and was transported to Shock Trauma in critical condition. Thankfully, EMT/Firefighter McMaster recovered from his injuries.Tragically, 3 BCFD firefighters, Lieutenant Paul Butrim , Acting Lt. Firefighter/Paramedic Kelsey Sadler, and Firefighter/Paramedic Kenny Lacayo , paid the ultimate sacrifice & gave their lives that morning. Firefighter/Paramedic Kenny Lacayo began serving the citizens of Maryland in 2011 as a member of the Wheaton Rescue Squad where he was named Paramedic of the Year in 2016. He became a career Firefighter/Paramedic for the Baltimore City Fire Department in 2014 and epitomized excellence, compassion, and bravery. Firefighter/Paramedic Kenneth Antonio Lacayo was 30 years old and had served the citizens of Maryland for 8 years.
