TAYLOR, Joseph S.

Box No. 288 sounded at 11:29 a.m. for a cellar fire. Engine Co. No. 24 was responding when it was struck by a tractor-trailer at Patterson Park Avenue and Monument Street. The engine skidded some 50 feet on the rain-soaked street and then overturned onto it's top, trapping and killing the driver of the engine, Firefighter Charles M. Jershied. Firefighter Joseph F. Taylor was riding the backstep of the engine when the collision occurred. Firefighter Taylor was ejected off of the back step of the engine and went head-on into the side of a US Mailbox on the street corner, killing him instantly. Firefighter Joseph S. Taylor was 41 years old. Number of years served are unknown at this time.
