GALLAGHER, James M.

July 15, 1961 Box No. 8474 sounded at 1:31 a.m. for a dwelling fire. Units arrived to find a well-involved 2-story frame dwelling. Hose pipes were brought into play and subsequently the basement of the dwelling was flooded. The Lieutenant and Firefighter off of Truck No. 14 were sent to the basement to look for the origin of the fire. Upon entering the basement they encountered and were immediately overcome by dense smoke. The Lieutenant was able to stumble & stagger out of the basement and called for help. Tragically, upon re-entering the dwelling, the body of Firefighter James A. Gallagher (T-14) was found by fellow firefighters floating in the flooded basement. Firefighter James A. Gallagher was 49 years old and had served 18 years
