Box No. 8474 sounded at 1:31 a.m. for a dwelling fire. Units arrived to find a well-involved 2-story frame dwelling. Hose pipes were brought into play and subsequently the basement of the dwelling was flooded. Lieutenant Head and Firefighter Gallagher off of Truck No. 14 were sent to the basement to look for the origin of the fire. Upon entering the basement they encountered and were immediately overcome by dense smoke. Lieutenant Head was able to stagger out of the basement and call for help. Tragically, upon re-entering the dwelling, the body of Firefighter James M. Gallagher was found by fellow firefighters floating in the flooded basement. Firefighter James M. Gallagher was 49 years old and had served 18 years
