Firefighter Stanley Damuth was riding on the Guardian Hose Company engine responding to assist the Vigilant Hose Company of Emmitsburg on a working house fire . The Guardian Hose Company engine was nearing the scene when Firefighter Damuth was thrown from the engine, going head-on into a road sign, and was fatally injured.

Firefighter Stanley Root Damuth ,Jr. was 21 years old.
