On Wednesday, August 11, 2021, late afternoon thunderstorms were moving through the area when Frederick County units were alerted for a reported house fire in the 9500 block of Ball Road. First arriving units reported a 2 story single-family home with fire showing. A rapid intervention task force was requested and quickly upgraded to a 2nd alarm incident.While executing an interior attack, Captain Josh Laird fell through the first floor and into the basement. Captain Laird transmitted a MAYDAY & rescue operations were immediately initiated. Fellow firefighters located & rescued Captain Laird from the basement of the dwelling. He was found to be in cardiac arrest, ACLS medical care commenced, and he was flown to MedStar Washington Hospital Center via Maryland State Police Aviation. Tragically, all resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.Captain Josh Laird was a decorated member of Frederick County Fire and Rescue Services having received numerous accolades and commendations for exemplary service including the Silver Metal of Bravery. He was an active member of the COVID-19 Incident Management Team and had formerly served as a Division Safety Officer & Paramedic. Captain Laird was promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief, posthumously.Battalion Chief Joshua D. “Josh” Laird was 46 years old and had served the citizens of Maryland for 21 years.
